Polish Tongue Twisters

ree

Polish tongue twisters, known as "łamańce językowe" (literally "language breakers"), show the phonetic characteristics of Polish, and may be quite difficult because of the complex consonant clusters for which Polish is well-known. Polish tongue twisters take this to the extreme, stringing together words or syllables that require precise articulation.

Let's see some examples:

Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie w Szczebrzeszynie

The beetle buzzes in the reeds in Szczebrzeszyn

Stół z powyłamywanymi nogami

A table with broken legs

W czasie suszy szosa sucha

During a drought, the road is dry

Król Karol kupił królowej Karolinie korale koloru koralowego

King Karol bought Queen Karolina coral-colored coral beads

Szły pchły koło wody, pchła pchłę pchła do wody. I ta pchła płakała, że ją tamta pchła wepchała.

They were walking near the water, a flea pushed a flea into the water. And the flea cried that the flea there had pushed it in.

Gdy Pomorze nie pomoże, to pomoże może morze, a gdy morze nie pomoże, to pomoże może las

When Pomerania won't help, maybe the sea will, and when the sea won't help, maybe the forest will

Ząb - zupa zębowa, dąb - zupa dębowa

Tooth - tooth soup, oak - oak soup
