Ordinal Numbers in Polish

In Polish, ordinal numbers are used to express order. They are different from cardinal numbers (1, 2, 3) and have a distinct form based on gender, case, and number.

In Polish, ordinal numbers are also used to tell the time. For example:

  • 13:00 - Pierwsza (godzina)

  • 07:00 - Siódma (godzina)

  • 09:00 - Dziewiąta (godzina)

Fractions in Polish

Polish fractions use numbers in the feminine and the denominator as an ordinal number in the non-masculine plural (in singular only for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 ...):

  • 1/2 - jedna druga (one half)

  • 2/3 - dwie trzecie (two thirds)

  • 3/4 - trzy czwarte

  • 4/5 - cztery piąte

You can also say:

  • 1/2 - pół (a half)
