The conditional mood in Polish (tryb warunkowy / tryb przypuszczający) is used to express hypothetical situations, wishes, polite requests, or unreal conditions. It is also used to form conditional sentences in Polish.
It is formed by using the 3rd person form of the past tense (either singular or plural) and adding the -by particle.
3 osoba w czasie przeszłym | końcówka |
chciał chciała chcieli chciały | -bym -byś -by -byśmy -byście -by |
Normally the particle -by is attached to the past form. However, it can be also preceeded.
Conditional sentences in Polish
The Polish conditional mood mainly uses the words: jeśli, jeżeli and gdyby to introduce the condition.
Jeśli miałabym czas, to poszłabym do kina
Jeśli bym miała czas, to bym poszła do kina
The fact that the word gdyby already has the particle -by in it means that there is no need to add it to the past tense.
Gdybym miała czas, to poszłabym do kina
Gdybym miała czas, to bym poszła do kina
